Canada Strong Pass gives Sarnia families free and discounted access to national parks, museums, and VIA Rail travel

From Point Pelee to provincial museums and VIA Rail trips, a new federal program is helping local families explore more of Canada this summer — without the cost or hassle.

This summer, Sarnia families can take advantage of a federal travel initiative offering free and discounted access to national parks, museums, and train travel — including day-trip destinations like Point Pelee National Park.

The Canada Strong Pass, in effect until September 2, 2025, aims to make local travel more accessible and affordable for families, children, and youth. The program includes free admission to Parks Canada sites, reduced VIA Rail fares, and discounts on camping and cultural attractions across the country.

“You do not need to physically bring a pass,” Valdez said. “If you visit Parks Canada or the VIA Rail website, or if you just go to the site in person, these discounts will already automatically apply.”

She encouraged Canadians to take advantage of destinations nearby and across the country. “If you don’t have a Canadian bucket list, now is the time to create that list,” she said.

Valdez also pointed to the broader impact of domestic travel. “Let’s support local,” she said. “Instead of travelling down south, this gives Canadians the opportunity to really support our beautiful country.”

The Canada Strong Pass includes:

  • Free admission to Parks Canada national parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas
  • 25% off camping and overnight stays at Parks Canada sites
  • Free VIA Rail travel for children aged 17 and under when accompanied by an adult
  • 25% VIA Rail discount for youth aged 18 to 24
  • Free admission for children at participating museums, and 50% off for youth aged 18 to 24

For Sarnia-area residents, the pass offers a chance to visit Point Pelee National Park — less than a two-hour drive — without paying admission. Families planning longer trips might consider destinations like Bruce Peninsula National Park, or nearby provincial museums such as the Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History and the Royal Botanical Gardens.

More information, including participating sites and how to access the discounts, is available at canadastrongpass.ca or through Parks Canada and VIA Rail.
