The Colborne Road fire hall responded to a call about an overturned vessel at 6:30 p.m. and arrived to see a man abandoning a sinking boat, in a dingy, in rough water about a mile from shore.
Within minutes the dingy also capsized, leaving the man and his dog in the water, Sarnia Fire Rescue said.
With the aid of a civilian and his personal watercraft, fire personnel entered the water and pulled both to safety.
The man was taken to Bluewater Health by Lambton EMS.
The Canadian and U.S. Coast Guards, St Clair County Sheriff and Point Edward Fire also responded.
