The city has authorized the demolition of the building and bleachers at 610 Devine Street, commonly known as Errol Russell Park.

The existing structures, which were built in 1950, were beyond their lifecycle. There are risk and liability concerns in the bleachers and operational deficiencies in the washrooms, change rooms and concession area, City Hall said.

Recently renamed “Stan Slack Field,” the 6.88-acre property in the heart of Sarnia features one manicured and fenced hardball diamond, and is one of the oldest ball fields in the city.

Late last year the city invited bids for design and construction of new washrooms, enhanced bleachers, change rooms, concession areas, field improvements and landscaping.

Burkhart Gilchrist Architects Inc. has been selected and will work with city staff and key stakeholders on the project.

The revitalization, which is scheduled for the spring of 2018, is expected to cost $400,000 to $700,000.

Demolition of the structures is expected in the coming months and should not affect the upcoming baseball season, the city said.
