City seeks community input for Mitton Street redesign ahead of 2026 reconstruction

Residents, businesses, and visitors invited to weigh in on infrastructure and streetscape plans.

The City of Sarnia is seeking public input as it moves ahead with the redesign of Mitton Street, with sewer and streetscape upgrades planned for 2026.

The project includes combined sewer separation between Wellington Street and Davis Street, and will integrate improvements to the streetscape intended to enhance safety, accessibility and community connection in Mitton Village. The area is identified in the city’s Community Improvement Plan as a priority for reinvestment.

“We’re looking to take a big step in shaping the future of our community that will boost a core business and residential area, improve safety, and accommodate road users of all ages and abilities,” said Alister Brown, Manager of Development and Transportation. “Mitton Village is such a vital link in the community, we hope the project will do more than replace infrastructure, but also drive community connections, civic pride and future investment.”

Design work is already underway, and city staff are collecting feedback from residents, businesses and visitors to help guide the final plan. An online survey is open until July 31 at www.speakupsarnia.ca/MittonStreetDesign. A separate survey for business owners in the area is also being distributed.

City council is expected to review input and preliminary design options at an upcoming meeting.

In addition to the city-led engagement, local advocacy group nuSarnia hosted a Jane’s Walk on June 12, inviting residents to tour the neighbourhood and share their thoughts on what is working and what could be improved along Mitton Street. Findings from the walk will be submitted to the city as part of the consultation process.
