Gillis could become deputy mayor

Sarnia is moving forward on the creation of a deputy mayor’s position.

Sarnia is moving forward on the creation of a deputy mayor’s position.

The details have yet to be finalized, but councillors agreed last week to appoint a deputy mayor from among the eight sitting members based on the highest number of votes received in the last election.

City-county councillor Anne Marie Gillis pulled in 8,951 votes in 2014 to edge out Bev MacDougall as the top vote getter.

City staff was directed to report back on the roles and responsibilities of a deputy mayor.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley, who is recovering from cancer surgery, did not attend the Sept. 12 council meeting.

In June, councillors voted to suspend the mayor’s pay 90 days after an integrity commissioner’s report said he’d bullied staff into resigning and acted in contravention of the Municipal Act.
