Smith Funeral Home is launching a monthly “Good Mourning Café” this Saturday at the McKenzie Blundy Chapel, offering a free, safe space for Sarnians to navigate grief together with professional support.

Grief is often a solitary journey, but a local initiative is working to ensure Sarnians don’t have to walk it alone.
On Saturday, Nov. 22, Smith Funeral Home will host its Good Mourning Café, a free community gathering designed to provide a safe landing spot for anyone navigating life after loss. The event will be held at their new location, the McKenzie Blundy Chapel at 431 Christina St. North, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
While funeral homes are traditionally viewed as places for final goodbyes, owner Scott Smith sees an opportunity to use their spaces to foster ongoing connection.
"Our inspiration was to create a safe and welcoming space where those who are grieving can gather, share their experiences, and access support in a warm, inviting environment," Smith explained. "We see this as a meaningful way to give back to our community by using our space for more than funerals and visitations."
The café is not a clinical therapy group, but rather an informal drop-in session. It features the support of Miranda Clubb, a Registered Nurse Psychotherapist and Certified Grief Recovery Specialist.
"The Café is designed as a relaxed, informal space where guests can simply be themselves," Smith said. "Miranda Clubb is available for individual, quiet moments of support, and she also offers a brief group discussion on a selected topic each session."
Organizers emphasize that there is "absolutely no pressure or expectation to participate—just a warm, safe place to sit among others who understand and share similar feelings."
The event is free and open to the public, regardless of whether they have used Smith Funeral Home’s services in the past. To add to the comfort of the morning, the home partners with local businesses to provide complimentary snacks and warm drinks for attendees.
"The Good Mourning Café is free and open to anyone seeking a safe, supportive place to ensure they never have to grieve alone," Smith said.
While this month's edition takes place at the McKenzie Blundy Chapel, the location may shift occasionally. Smith noted that the goal is to offer the café on the fourth Saturday of every month.
"Above all, we want every family to feel comfortable, supported, and cared for as they navigate their journey through loss," said Smith.
