A new initiative, “Keep Me Safe,” has been launched in Sarnia-Lambton to protect children involved in sports. This program is a collaborative effort between Athletes Empowered and the Sarnia-Lambton Children’s Aid Society, with generous funding from Jumpstart.

The “Keep Me Safe” program is a proactive, community-driven initiative that provides coaches, teachers, therapists, doctors, and other adults with the necessary tools and knowledge to create safer environments for young athletes. It aims to empower trusted adults to identify risks, respond appropriately, and foster a culture of safety.

The program's launch is particularly timely, following a report from the Future of Sport in Canada Commission that highlighted widespread abuse and mistreatment in sports across the country. “Keep Me Safe” directly addresses this urgent call for action by offering practical and accessible resources.

According to Melanie Hunt, Director of Development at Athletes Empowered, the program reinforces the idea that "protecting children matters more than winning medals." Dawn Flegel, Executive Director of the Sarnia-Lambton Children’s Aid Society, added that "Keep Me Safe is about giving adults the knowledge, confidence and clarity to be part of the solution."
