Mystery reader program turns storytelling into community connection

A long-running tradition within the Lambton Kent District School Board is transforming Friday story time into an event that connects students with local leaders and athletes.

Every Friday, the atmosphere at King George Public School shifts with a specific kind of energy. The students know a guest is coming, but the identity remains a secret until the door finally opens. It is the Mystery Reader program, a tradition that has turned story time into a highly anticipated weekly event.

The initiative began in November 2016 with former teacher Pete Cobb as the inaugural guest. Since then, it has grown into a staple for the school and the wider Lambton Kent District School Board. The goal is simple: to build excitement around literacy while introducing students to positive role models.

The roster of guests has included local heroes and national stars. In 2018, WNBA player Bridget Carleton surprised the students, bringing the entire Iowa State Basketball Team with her to read. Police officers, firefighters, radio hosts, and military veterans have also taken the spotlight.

The sessions go beyond simple storytelling. Students engage directly with the guests, asking questions that range from how police officers stay brave to why veterans chose to serve. These interactions turn the visits into learning moments that extend far beyond the pages of a book.

King George Principal Danielle Maryschuk describes literacy as the heartbeat of the school. She notes that the program bridges the gap between classrooms and the wider community. It demonstrates to students that reading is a lifelong joy shared by people from all walks of life.

Kindergarten educator Brittney Brown observes that the learning goes both ways. She says guests are often paused by the thoughtful questions children ask. It reminds the adults how meaningful a child’s perspective can be.

The program has since inspired other schools within the district to adopt similar traditions. It stands as a testament to the power of community connection. It shows what happens when a school opens its doors to the world outside.
