A dedicated group of local volunteers has ensured that ten feral cats from the Petrolia area are spending their first Christmas in a climate-controlled sanctuary. Rather than facing a winter of starvation, these animals now have a safe and comfortable home. The new facility is a collaboration between the Caregivers of Petrolia Ferals and the wildlife protection organization Zoocheck.

The sanctuary provides a permanent home for a colony that lived at the Lorne C. Henderson Conservation Area for more than a decade. The move follows a decision by conservation area management to stop the feeding and care of the cats earlier this year. While non-native species can impact native wildlife, the community-led response ensured these animals were not simply left to starve.

The sanctuary features a pre-built insulated cabin located on private property near Petrolia. It includes an attached "catio," a fenced outdoor enclosure that allows the cats to experience the outdoors while preventing them from roaming or hunting. This humane solution protects both the cats and the small wildlife living in their native habitat.

This project highlights the ongoing local effort to address the consequences of pet abandonment and the structural challenges of managing feral populations. By creating a permanent site, the group has replaced a cycle of displacement with a sustainable, community-rooted solution. It reflects a commitment to mercy and community kindness during the holiday season.
