Petrolia Mayor Brad Loosley will not seek re-election this fall, bringing an end to a municipal career that has spanned more than four decades.

Loosley announced during a recent town council meeting that he will not run in the Oct. 26 municipal election, concluding two terms as mayor after first being elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. Prior to becoming mayor, he served the municipality in other roles, including as town clerk, contributing to a total of 44 years in municipal government.
The 77-year-old said his decision is not related to his health. Loosley stepped away from mayoral duties in early 2023 following heart bypass surgery but returned to the role later that year. He has since resumed full responsibilities and indicated he is in good health.
His departure comes as Petrolia continues to advance several major infrastructure projects initiated during his tenure. Among the most significant is the approximately $16-million water intake project connecting the community to Lake Huron near Bright’s Grove, expected to be completed this year. Upgrades to the Petrolia Water Treatment Plant and planned watermain improvements were also identified as key projects that position the municipality for long-term stability.
During his time as mayor, Loosley also oversaw community milestones including the town’s 150th anniversary celebrations, along with ongoing municipal development and planning initiatives.
The decision not to seek another term opens the field for prospective candidates ahead of the fall municipal election. His early announcement provides additional time for council members and residents considering a mayoral campaign to prepare.
