Sarnia resident Laura Mclean captured this photo, and writes:
“The Killdeer have begun to hatch their young in the area around the hills by the Great Lakes Model. Watch when stepping on the grass there as the eggs are laid right on the ground and resemble rocks.”
Killdeer are shorebirds that can also be found nesting in fields, gravel driveways and lawns. Eggs are incubated in April and incubated for around 25 days, according to Discover Southern Ontario.
“I was glad to see the four youngsters running freely today after the large mower had been over the area this morning,” Mclean added. “Not sure how many other eggs may have been there, but hopefully we’ll see more young arriving in the coming weeks.”
