A service designed to help monitor vulnerable residents is being offered in Sarnia-Lambton, Lambton OPP announced this week.
Project Lifesaver is a community based, public safety, non-profit organization that provides law enforcement, fire/rescue, and caregivers with a program designed to protect, and when necessary, quickly locate individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to the life threatening behaviour of wandering.
“Select police officers that have been qualified as Project Lifesaver Electronic Search Specialists operate the radio frequency-based tracking system,” Lambton OPP said in a news release this week. “Project Lifesaver uses proven technology that allows first responders to quickly locate a wandering person and get them back to their families.”
The primary goal of the program is to provide a timely response to save lives and reduce the potential for injury for adults and children who may wander due to Alzheimer’s disease, Autism, Down syndrome, Acquired Brain Injury, and other cognitive conditions.
Program participants wear a one-ounce personalized wristband that emits a continuous radio frequency that can be tracked by a Project Lifesaver receiver.
“There is a small fee to join the program and additional cost to maintain the radio emitter, but we encourage you to reach out if you feel this program is a good fit for someone you care about,” OPP noted.
