The City of Sarnia is forecasting $447,602 in expenses to keep Rainbow Park cleared throughout 2025, following the direction issued at a Special Council Meeting on June 14, 2024.
The park was formally cleared on February 20, 2025, but ongoing security and fencing remain in place to prevent further encampments. The projected cost covers the full 2025 calendar year and includes all monitoring, security, and remediation for the site.
According to the city’s budget materials, the total includes contracted security services and physical barriers installed around the property. Although the location is no longer occupied, staff indicated that without continued security measures the risk of re-encampment remains high.
The forecasted $447,602 is being carried as a taxpayer-funded operating cost for 2025. The figures reflect only the containment and monitoring of the site, separate from any long-term plans for the future use of Rainbow Park.
