Members of there Rotary Club of Sarnia say they were pleased with their meeting with Ontario’s associate minister of housing this week.
“It was awesome,” John DeGroot said of the club’s sit down meeting with rob Flack. “Our community has made a lot of progress recently and we wanted to bring him up to speed.”
The group has been advocating for new supportive and affordable housing in Sarnia-Lambton. “We heard the Minister was coming to town, so we just reached out and asked for some time,” added DeGroot.
Group members say the meeting covered a range of topics, including the specific needs in regional communities like Sarnia-Lambton, which sometimes get overshadowed by larger cities.
They also shared with the Minister the January report commissioned by the County of Lambton calling for multiple new construction projects.
In February, County Councillors committed to completing one of the projects in 18 months. They also shared plans from three non-profits that will be seeking public co-investment funds in order to build new supportive and affordable housing, the group added.
“The point is, we need provincial money to make this happen,” said DeGroot. “It’s not going to happen on its own. We’re just glad they’re here and listening.”
