The Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce joined a provincial delegation to Washington to advocate for tariff-free trade and stable cross-border relations ahead of the CUSMA review.

The Sarnia-Lambton business community was represented in Washington, D.C. as part of a recent Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) mission focused on strengthening Canada–U.S. economic relations at a critical time for North American trade with the upcoming CUSMA review. The delegation brought together business and policy leaders to meet with key stakeholders, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, major American companies, members of Congress from both Republican and Democratic offices, and Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, David Wiseman.
Across every meeting, a clear and consistent message emerged from both Canadian and American partners: the future of North American competitiveness depends on collaboration, integrated supply chains, and the removal of tariffs that are creating uncertainty and added costs for businesses and consumers. For Sarnia-Lambton, this message carries particular weight. As a critical hub in North America’s energy and petrochemical corridor, the region relies heavily on seamless cross-border trade. Local industries—including energy, chemicals, manufacturing, and agriculture—are deeply connected to U.S. markets, with supply chains that cross the border daily.
“Disruptions at the border are not theoretical for Sarnia-Lambton—they directly impact local jobs, investment decisions, and economic growth,” said Carrie McEachran, CEO of the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce. “What we heard in Washington strongly reinforces what our members are experiencing: businesses on both sides of the border want stability, predictability, and the removal of unnecessary trade barriers.” Meetings with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and American business leaders highlighted strong alignment between the two countries’ private sectors. There is broad support for tariff-free trade and a shared recognition that integrated supply chains are a competitive advantage for North America in key sectors such as energy, manufacturing, natural resources, and agriculture.
The delegation also engaged with policymakers from both sides of the political aisle, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a stable and rules-based trade environment through the upcoming review of the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). A meeting with Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, David Wiseman, further underscored the importance of continued diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two countries, particularly as global trade dynamics evolve. The mission comes more than a year into ongoing trade disruptions, reinforcing the urgency of renewing confidence in CUSMA and ensuring it continues to serve as a trilateral framework that benefits businesses, workers, and communities.
For Sarnia-Lambton, the path forward is clear: continued cross-border collaboration is essential to sustaining the region’s economic strength. “Our local economy is built on our relationship with the United States,” added Carrie McEachran. “Strengthening that partnership—and ensuring trade remains open, fair, and predictable —will be key to future growth and opportunity for our community.” The Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce will continue to advocate on behalf of its members to ensure that the region’s voice is heard in national and international trade discussions.
