Sarnia preparing next wave of candidates with April 21 election session

City-led information session to guide candidates and advertisers through rules, finances, and nomination process.

The City of Sarnia is inviting prospective candidates and third-party advertisers to attend an upcoming information session aimed at preparing participants for the 2026 Municipal Election.

The session will take place at 5 p.m. on April 21, 2026, in Council Chambers at City Hall, and will be delivered by the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

City officials say the session is designed to provide a clear overview of the rules, processes, and requirements under the Municipal Elections Act, helping participants better understand what is required to run for office or participate as a third-party advertiser.

Topics to be covered include eligibility requirements for candidates and third-party advertisers, the nomination process for those seeking office, campaign finance rules including expenses and contribution limits, and the role of the compliance audit committee.

The session is open to the public and does not require registration.

Nominations for the 2026 Municipal Election will officially open on May 1, 2026, marking the start of the formal election process.
