Sarnia’s 123rd Labour Day Parade to celebrate workers with theme “Elbows Up Canada”

Parade marshal Candace Young says the goal is to honour all workers, unionized and non-unionized, while bringing the community together.

Sarnia’s Labour Day Parade will return to Front Street on Monday, September 1, celebrating workers under the banner “Elbows Up Canada.”

The 123rd edition of the parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at Front and Davis streets and will proceed north to Maxwell Street, with a detour this year due to downtown construction.

Trophies will be awarded in several categories, including Best Union Float, Best Band, Best Commercial Entry and Best Non-Commercial Entry.

This year’s parade marshal is Candace Young, who said the theme reflects the importance of unity at a time of global uncertainty.

“Elbows Up Canada is a message of standing together as labour in our community and in the country,” Young said. “With tariff wars ongoing it is important that we show a united front with every effort to keep the jobs we have and to grow our workforce.”

She added that Labour Day is an opportunity to celebrate all workers — unionized and non-unionized — alongside community partners.

“Labour is a big part of our community and it’s important as labour activists and workers that we continue to advocate for health and safety, better wages, and better working conditions,” she said. “On Labour Day, our goal is to celebrate and honour the workers in our communities… We are always glad to celebrate with community groups and local businesses that join us, for example, the United Way and Preferred Towing. It is a time to come together.”
