Normally, Sarnia doesn’t get enough snow for snowshoers to do their thing. But then, this isn’t a normal winter.

Students at St. Clair Secondary are the latest to give the classic Canadian sport a whirl, thanks to 10 pair or snowshoes the school purchased recently.

Last year, a group of St. Clair teachers applied for a grant to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations, which gives schools with up to $700 to introduce new sports and physical activities.

St. Clair’s ‘Try a Day Club’ has a number of snowshoe outings planned, while the school’s phys ed and environment science classes also plan to take a crack at the new equipment.

The club also organizes geocaching events, yoga and floor hockey. A line dance event is also in the works.

“We’re trying to get more kids active with activities for everybody,” says organizer and teacher Danielle Bracewell.
