Sarnia Language Exchange is a group of people who meet on Saturdays to support each other in the beautiful journey of acquiring a new language. Founded by Chileans María José Castillo, Jimmy Miller and Javier López, who arrived in Sarnia in 2023, it has now become a prominent meeting point for the local community.
These friends had a clear idea and great motivation: to improve their language skills through immersion and to get to know the local community and its culture. María José and Jimmy shared the idea of contributing to the Sarnia community through teaching Spanish. Javier quickly joined this initiative, having noticed the interest in learning Spanish within the community through his role as a student at Lambton College and his part-time job at Uber, where he met many of the Canadians who now participate in the group.
"In Chile, I specialized and worked for years in human resources, always excelling in creating good relationships with people. Thanks to that, it was easier to reach out to the invited people and support them on their journey. We have been able to build trust where in the meetings we talk about how our week went. I am very happy to be part of this group," said Javier Lopez.
These friends started planning the meetings, opting for discussions that not only teach Spanish but also create spaces for those interested in improving or learning English. The first meeting of Sarnia Language Exchange took place on Feb. 17 10 a.m. at a local Tim Hortons, organized by Jimmy through a Facebook group called "Sarnia Language Exchange." To the surprise of the organizers, more than 10 people attended this first meeting.
"I love the participation we've had so far. Although the three of us started this movement, it's thanks to the community that we've been holding meetings for more than five months," said Jimmy Miller.
Due to the growing number of participants, subsequent meetings were held in a classroom at Lambton College on Saturdays for two hours, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This change of location allowed us to offer more comfort and privacy for all attendees.
Five months later, the group has grown significantly, with 88 members on Facebook and an average attendance of 8 to 15 people per meeting. These sessions are characterized by their friendly atmosphere and are divided according to the competence level of each attendee, welcoming both beginners and those with previous experience who want to improve their skills in the second language.
"For nearly 10 years I worked as a teacher in Chile, and a specialization in educational needs provided me with the experience that we all learn in different ways, and not everyone finds that path. Therefore, in the classes, I try to adapt the content according to each person's needs to ensure they stay motivated and progress, making it a beneficial experience for them," said María José Castillo.
The founders of Sarnia Language Exchange are extremely satisfied to see the progress of the participants, who have significantly improved their skills in Spanish and English. They are grateful for the opportunity to meet new people within the community, as the meetings are open to families as well.

Sarnia Language Exchange es un grupo de personas que se reúnen los sábados para apoyarse mutuamente en este hermoso camino de adquirir un nuevo idioma. Fundado por los chilenos María José Castillo, Jimmy Miller y Javier López, quienes llegaron a Sarnia en 2023, actualmente se ha convertido en un destacado punto de encuentro para la comunidad local.
Estos amigos tenían una idea clara y una gran motivación: mejorar el idioma mediante la inmersión y conocer a la comunidad local y su cultura. María José y Jimmy compartieron la idea de contribuir a la comunidad de Sarnia a través de la enseñanza del español. Javier se sumó rápidamente a esta iniciativa, ya que había notado el interés en aprender español dentro de la comunidad gracias a su rol como estudiante en Lambton College y su trabajo a tiempo parcial en Uber, donde conoció a muchas de las personas canadienses que hoy participan en el grupo.
"En Chile me especialicé y trabajé durante años en Recursos Humanos, siempre destacándome en crear buenas relaciones con las personas. Gracias a eso, fue más fácil llegar a las personas invitadas y apoyarlas en su camino. Hemos podido crear lazos de confianza, donde en las reuniones conversamos sobre cómo fue nuestra semana. Estoy muy contento de poder ser parte de este grupo," dijo Javier López.
Estos amigos comenzaron a planificar los encuentros, optando por realizar conversatorios que no solo enseñen español, sino que también abran espacios para aquellos interesados en mejorar o aprender inglés. La primera reunión de Sarnia Language Exchange tuvo lugar el 17 de febrero de 2024 a las 10 AM en un Tim Hortons local, organizada por Jimmy a través de un grupo en Facebook llamado "Sarnia Language Exchange". Para sorpresa de los organizadores, más de 10 personas asistieron a esta primera reunión.
"Me encanta la participación que ha habido hasta el momento. Aunque somos los tres quienes iniciamos este movimiento, es gracias a la comunidad que llevamos más de 5 meses realizando reuniones," dijo Jimmy Miller.
Debido al creciente número de participantes, las reuniones subsecuentes se llevaron a cabo en una de las aulas de Lambton College los sábados, durante dos horas, desde las 11:00 AM hasta la 1:00 PM. Este cambio de ubicación nos permitió ofrecer mayor comodidad y privacidad para todos los asistentes.
Cinco meses después, el grupo ha crecido significativamente, con 88 miembros en Facebook y una asistencia promedio de 8 a 15 personas por reunión. Estas sesiones se destacan por su ambiente amigable y se dividen según el nivel de competencia de cada asistente, acogiendo tanto a principiantes como a aquellos con experiencia previa que desean mejorar sus habilidades en el segundo idioma.
"Durante cerca de 10 años me desempeñé como profesora en Chile, y una especialización en necesidades educativas me brindó la experiencia de que todos aprendemos de manera diferente y no todos encuentran ese camino. Por lo que en las clases trato de ir adaptando el contenido de acuerdo a las necesidades de cada persona para asegurarnos de mantenerlos motivados y que vayan avanzando y sea una instancia provechosa para ellos," dijo María José Castillo.
Los fundadores de Sarnia Language Exchange están extremadamente satisfechos al ver el progreso de los participantes, quienes han mejorado notablemente sus habilidades en español e inglés, y están agradecidos por la oportunidad de conocer nuevas personas dentro de la comunidad, ya que las reuniones están abiertas para asistir con los familiares.
