Housing Opportunities Made for Everyone (HOME), a group involving local volunteers and community partners, has launched a $5-million capital campaign to help advance multiple supportive housing projects planned for Sarnia-Lambton. The initiative supports a proposed 50-unit Indwell development on George Street, along with additional Indwell projects anticipated for the region.

The George Street project, planned on land donated by the County of Lambton earlier this year, includes a five-storey, purpose-built supportive housing building. A minor-variance application has been submitted to the City of Sarnia, and early cost estimates place the build in the range of $16 million to $18 million. Final figures will depend on a future tender process.

Funds raised through the campaign will either be directed to Indwell or invested through a local foundation, depending on the needs of each project. HOME members say ongoing financial support will be required as planning and construction progress.

The group began organizing in mid-2023, focusing on securing community support for supportive housing—defined as affordable housing integrated with services for mental health, addictions, and stability supports. Their efforts contributed to increased collaboration among local leaders, Indwell, and the County of Lambton, which announced plans in 2024 to develop between 150 and 300 supportive housing units across the region in response to rising homelessness.

Approximately 150 people attended a recent campaign event on November 20th at DeGroot’s Nurseries, which helped generate more than $230,000 in new commitments. HOME plans to continue engaging donors through direct outreach and periodic events as the campaign advances.

The group’s original goal, set in 2023, was to see five supportive housing projects established within five years. While progress has been slower than anticipated, planning and partnership development continue as funding efforts expand.
