On Tuesday evening along the St. Clair River, laughter, conversation, and quiet moments of reflection filled the deck of the Duc d’Orléans II as the local non-profit organization That Girl’s Got Moxie hosted a special river cruise for individuals and families currently navigating the challenges of cancer.

The evening offered participants an opportunity to step away from medical appointments, treatments, and daily stressors to simply enjoy time together in a supportive and uplifting environment. Guests encouraged one another and experienced an evening centred around compassion, dignity, and community connection while enjoying music and dancing provided by Totally Acoustics.

Founded with the mission of supporting individuals facing cancer through acts of kindness and meaningful experiences, That Girl’s Got Moxie continues to make a significant impact throughout the Sarnia-Lambton community. Events such as this river cruise remind participants that they are not facing their journey alone.

“They are just talking amongst themselves, and everybody is wearing a smile. We were so blessed that we were able to partner with the Duc and offer this. I think it is a nice, needed break from their day to day. There is no thinking of treatments or when I have to get to my next appointment, it’s just enjoying the evening,” said Terri Pask, one of the organizers and members of the That Girl’s Got Moxie team.

As the boat moved slowly along the shoreline, many guests reflected on the importance of human connection during difficult times. Volunteers, organizers, and supporters helped create an atmosphere that was both joyful and deeply meaningful.

For some attendees, the evening represented a rare opportunity to relax and reconnect with others who truly understand the emotional realities of living with cancer. For others, it was simply a chance to enjoy the beauty of the river surrounded by kindness and encouragement.

Community support remains essential to the continued efforts of That Girl’s Got Moxie, whose volunteers work tirelessly to provide comfort, advocacy, and memorable experiences for local residents facing cancer diagnoses.

Captain Bill Turner and his wife Angela believe it is important that local businesses such as the Duc d’Orléans support local organizations such as That Girl’s Got Moxie and were happy to offer the evening cruise to the Moxie team. Angela explained, “We met while they were setting up at a recent event and we asked if they would like us to donate a cruise.”

In a world often dominated by fast headlines and difficult news, evenings like this serve as a reminder that compassion still moves quietly through communities like Sarnia — sometimes carried gently along the river at sunset.
