Third Tecumseh Skate Jam brings skaters, families, and community spirit to Sarnia’s Tecumseh Park

Skaters, bands, and families took over Tecumseh Park on Saturday for the third annual Tecumseh Skate Jam, transforming the heart of Sarnia into a pulsing celebration of movement, music, and community. What began as a grassroots gathering in 2023 has grown into one of the city’s most beloved summer events, drawing crowds from across Lambton County and beyond.

Hundreds of people from across Lambton County and southwestern Ontario gathered at Tecumseh Park on Saturday, July 26, for the third annual Tecumseh Skate Jam—a high-energy day packed with skateboarding competitions, live music, and a sprawling vintage and makers market.

Running from noon until 6 p.m., the free all-ages event transformed the park’s upgraded skate facilities into a hub of sound, movement, and creativity. Skaters from all over the region came to compete in challenges on the bowl, A-frame ledge, stair set, and bank-to-ledge features, with prizes sponsored by Family Skateboard Company and The Bicycle Shop.

But the event was about more than just skating.

Families filled the park, browsing more than two dozen vendor booths organized in partnership with Mitton Market, featuring everything from handcrafted guitar pedals and plant nurseries to upcycled vintage clothing and local skate brands. Food vendors like Giresi’s Pizza, Greens Organic, and Maud’s Variety kept the crowds fueled throughout the afternoon.

The music lineup was a full slate of loud, local talent including Breach, Lime Ricky, MVLL CRIMES, Weird Neighbours, Wired Wrong, and Beef Boys. From punk to experimental noise to high-energy rock, the bands set a raucous backdrop for the day’s celebration of community and counterculture.

Now in its third year, the Skate Jam has grown from a grassroots idea into one of the most anticipated summer events in south Sarnia. What began as a way to bring attention to recent upgrades at the Norma Cox Youth Centre and skate park has turned into a full-day festival celebrating movement, youth culture, and local talent.

Organizers Kyle McDougall, Chris Lelievre, Billy-Jean Whiting, Kyle Buckle, and Cam Starr continue to run the event entirely as volunteers, rallying support from local sponsors and community partners. Profits from event merch support the Weir Active Foundation, helping kids access sports and recreation opportunities across the region.

If Saturday was any indication, the Tecumseh Skate Jam has firmly planted itself as a cornerstone of the summer calendar in Sarnia—drawing not just skaters and music fans, but entire families out to enjoy a park made for everyone.
