Council stalling on Fort Mac donation was a mistake
Sir: I am proud to live in Point Edward and further extremely proud of its democratically elected mayor and council, who have chosen to stand as an independent municipality and donate $5,000 to the Fort McMurray fire victims.
Although Point Edward is also part of the county tier of government, they have chosen, like Petrolia did, to act independently and help our fellow Canadians in northern Alberta by making a donation to help these people in need. They did not wait to see what the county was going to decide.
It is encouraging to see elected officials who are so empathetic to people in need who act quickly.
There is absolutely no need to wait to see what another level of government is going to do, but to do what is correct and to help others who are in desperate need as quickly as possible.
This was certainly the right decision, and their actions show that by being independent and acting positively in a desperate situation they are a very caring council.
Finally, I am amused that a very large municipality in the county recently tabled a donation motion pending a decision that might be made at the county government level, even though its mayor suggested a donation be made to support Fort McMurray. This city council is the same group that spent money to join the Association of Municipalities Ontario (AMO), even though they were already a part of AMO through Lambton County.
In that case, they wanted their own independent membership and did not want to be reliant on the county. I do not understand their logic in the two decisions.
Thank you and congratulations to the mayor of Point Edward and our council.
Mayor Mike (Bradley), you did try to do the right thing. Your council’s decision to delay support is not helpful to those who need assistance immediately. I am sure I am not alone in recognizing that you tried to do the right thing.

School board trustees failed Sarnia
Sir: I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to those who fought so long and so intensely to save SCITS.
If we have learned nothing else from this experience, we can honestly and proudly say that we are a community of concerned, knowledgeable, resolute and honest people. People who bravely bearded the lion that is the Lambton Kent District School Board.
If they choose to continue the fight, I publicly vow to do what I can to help them. For the record, I am a concerned, transplanted 28 years ago, citizen of Sarnia with no vested interest or “emotional” ties to SCITS.
To trustees Elizabeth Hudie and Lareina Rising, (and student trustee Cole Anderson), thank you, most sincerely, for voting against the closure of SCITS!
You showed true courage, intelligence and common sense when you made your decision. Unfortunately, your fellow board members do not share your integrity.
To the trustees who voted to close SCITS, I say you have proven yourself to be without courage, intelligence and common sense. With your lack of integrity you have personally contributed to the death of the heart of Sarnia and its community.
Shame on you.
Sincerely,
Claudette Gasbarini
Sarnia
