“I had no idea,” said the 17-year-old, who is serving as choreographer for Rebound’s ACT II production of A Little Princess at the Imperial Theatre.

The program is like a family in which youth come together and work with adult allies to put on “this amazing show that delivers such great energy,” she said.

The program uses theatrical arts to help youth build life and social skills in a fun environment. It’s also the subject of a Lambton College research study examining vulnerable youth and what prevention supports theatre can provide as a protective factor.

Now in its eighth year, ACT II is offered free of charge to about 100 youth annually. Program expenses are offset mostly through ticket sales, donations and sponsorships.

Williams, who will be entering her first year of post-secondary studies in musical theatre, said the program has been a good learning experience.

“I’ve never once said, ‘No, I don’t want to be at ACT II tonight.’”

ACT II is open to youth aged 8-24. Participants meet three evenings a week and take full control of the production, including casting, choreography, set design, backstage, acting, lighting and music, said co-ordinator Sara Ireland.

“That makes it so unique,” she said. “It’s so inspirational to watch them.”

Ireland said her favourite part is when the group steps back to take its final bow knowing they created something special.
