A new participatory arts project, Jasons Sarnia, is enlisting local youth to document 50 years of Francophone history through photography and audio storytelling to celebrate the community’s evolving identity in Sarnia-Lambton.

Correction: A previous version of this story omitted two key partners involved in the "Jasons Sarnia" initiative. This project is an initiative of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, delivered in partnership with the Alliance culturelle de l’Ontario, with the support of the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Arts Council, and TFO.
The Centre communautaire francophone de Sarnia-Lambton has launched a new artistic initiative to bridge the gap between the region's history and its future. The project, titled "Jasons Sarnia: Portraits of a Vibrant Francophonie," invites local youth to document the lives and stories of people who have shaped the Francophone community over the last half-century.
Part of a wider provincial celebration called "Celebrating 50 years, Shaping the future together," the local effort focuses on participatory creation. Youth participants will work alongside professional artists to capture the essence of Francophone life in Sarnia-Lambton through a blend of photography and audio storytelling.
The project aims to move beyond faceless historical records by centring on the lived experiences of local figures. Participants will conduct interviews and take portraits, creating a collective work that illustrates how the community has evolved since the 1970s. This approach ensures that the narrative of the region is told by the people who inhabit it rather than outside institutions.
Tanya Tamilio, President of the Centre communautaire francophone de Sarnia-Lambton, sees the project as a vital platform for local visibility. "This is an opportunity to tell our story and showcase our community," Tamilio said.
The final results will be displayed in an interactive public exhibition. By using a mobile format, the Centre intends to share these local successes and stories of resilience with audiences both within and beyond the Sarnia-Lambton borders. This project is an initiative of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, delivered in partnership with the Alliance culturelle de l’Ontario, with the support of the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Arts Council, and TFO.
By engaging the younger generation in this historical work, the project seeks to strengthen Francophone pride and ensure the community's cultural legacy remains a living, breathing part of Sarnia's identity.
