Born October 14, 1936, died June 18, 2024 as the result of a brain aneurysm. He was predeceased in January 2024 by his loving wife of 62 years, Marilynn, and in 2016 by their beloved son Mike. Deeply missed by his son Bruce (Christine Murphy), their children Andrew and Ryan and by Mike’s wife, Joanne Bortolotto, and their children Christian, Michela, Joshua and Johnpaul. Predeceased by his sister Doris in 2019.
Arnold was born in Hamilton to Llew Davies and Mary (Sangster) Davies. The family moved to a farm near Lynden when he was a young child. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Guelph where he met Marilynn. They were married in 1961. Arnold worked as an engineer for a number of food processing and manufacturing companies, most notably Fiberglas Canada in Guelph and Sarnia, and then as supervisor of maintenance for the Grey County Board of Education in Markdale until he retired in 1992. In retirement he and Marilynn loved spending time at their cottage at Cedar Terraces near Kincardine.
Arnold enjoyed playing sports, including baseball and hockey as a youth and golf, badminton, and curling in his adult years. He was a gifted woodturner and enjoyed creating practical and decorative items in his shop. He was actively involved in the life of Grace United Church in Sarnia and Annesley United Church in Markdale. He was also a dedicated Rotarian for many years with the Markdale Rotary Club and was honoured as a Paul Harris Fellow.
We will remember Arnold for his pervasive optimism, his quiet determination, and his devotion to Marilynn and their family.
A celebration of Arnold’s life will be held at Grace United Church, Sarnia, on July 16, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Social time to follow in the church hall.
The family is grateful for the exemplary care provided to Arnold by the care teams at Markdale hospital, Marshall Gowland Manor, and Bluewater Health. Please consider a donation to Centre Grey Health Services Foundation, Bluewater Health Foundation, or a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
