Barb passed away peacefully at age 83 on April 12, 2024 at Sumac Lodge Long-Term Care Home in Sarnia, Ontario. After surviving a debilitating stroke 18 years ago that left Barb paralyzed on her left side she spent those years fighting to be able to walk again and never giving up. It was a long journey for her but was forever positive and grateful for her life to be able to have her ability to still take part in family celebrations and have meaningful conversations with the people she loved. Predeceased by her loving husband (Percy) Douglas Hart. Cherished mother to Marcia (Hugh) Hayes, Chris Hart, Michael (Jodi) Hart and Michelle Hart (Scott Hunter). Special Grandma to Shaylene (Craig) Campbell and Hudson Hayes, Steven Hart, Jameson and Mitchell Hart, and Laura and Brock Hunter. Survived by her sister Nancy (Budd) Gilbert, brother Robert (Maxine) Hyde and sister-in-law June Clark. Barb will be dearly missed by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Wes and Margaret Hyde; in-laws Percy and Evelyn Hart; sibling-in-laws Sandy and Marjorie Miller, Bob Clark, Bill and Patricia Davis, Ray and Geraldine Guindon; niece Margaret Clark-Peacock and nephews Steven Guindon, Robert Sheldon and Michael Peacock. Barb enjoyed several careers in her life starting as a medical assistant, working in the Sarnia General Hospital ER, CN Rail, Real Estate Agent and finishing up at the A&P before retiring. Barb and Doug loved to travel and got away south whenever they could, and spending time at their cottage in Kettle Point visiting with their closest friends and family. Barb’s most rewarding job was being a mom and grandma where she was always there cheering them on in sports and lending a hand whenever she could. Many people in her life called her their second “Mom”. Barb was blessed with so many loving people in her life. She always had so many friends and loved ones coming up to visit with her, keeping her company and bringing her special gifts and treats, including her high school classmates (the 59ers) and her friends from Grace United Church. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Sumac Lodge for the wonderful care she received over the last 17 years. You really were her extended family and she loved getting to know all of you through you sharing your personal stories and pictures of your families with her. A graveside service will be held for family and close friends at Lakeview Cemetery on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 1:00 pm. A celebration of life will be held on June 8, 2024 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Stokes Inland (Sidepockets) with a commemorative ceremony starting at 3:00 pm. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (cheques only at the funeral home please). Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
