Peacefully with his daughter by his side, on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at Bluewater Health, Alfred “Alfie” Jencso passed away at the age of 85. Born in Kiralyhaza, Hungary. Beloved son of Maria Jakob and Gyula Jencso. Beloved husband of Jacqueline Jencso (Hoey) (2002). Father of Aniko Coughlan (Jencso). Predeceased by his sister Katalin. Survived by his dear brothers Lajos and Ferenc along with their children all from Hungary. During the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, Alfred fled from Hungary at the age of 17 in hopes for a better life. He eventually immigrated to Canada and proudly became a Canadian Citizen in 1962 while living in Montreal. Alfred worked as soccer referee, professional delivery and limousine driver in Montreal while learning the English language. Alfred met his wife Jacqueline in Montreal who also immigrated to Canada from Scotland. He later moved with his family to Ontario. Alfred continued his career as a professional truck driver until his retirement. Alfred was finally able to follow his passion and start his second career as a small business owner in Sarnia. His dream became a reality when he opened “Alfie’s Deli”. His business grew in popularity because of his famous sandwiches which were in high demand from local high school students, police officers, firefighters, EMS and others. It was very common to see customers lined up out the door at lunch hour waiting for their sandwiches. Alfred’s family would like to thank the community for their support of Alfie’s deli as he was so proud of his business upon retirement that his dream finally came true. During the past several years, Alfred’s health began to decline rapidly. Alfred’s daughter would like to thank all of his health care providers for their support and guidance including everyone at Bluewater Health over the past few months. Alfred’s daughter would also like to thank all staff at Rosewood Manor and recently Marshall Gowland Manor for their care and kindness towards her father. Alfred’s daughter would also like to thank all of her friends, everyone at the Sarnia Crown Attorney’s Office and others at the Sarnia Courthouse for all of their friendship and support during this difficult time. Alfred’s family would also like to thank all the strangers they will never meet who provided him with food, shelter and employment as he made his way from Hungary to Canada in search of a more peaceful and better life. Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Alfred’s wishes, no services will be held. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to World Central Kitchen (cheques only at the funeral home please) This organization provides meals to the front lines in response to humanitarian, climate and community crisis across the world.
