Basil Harold Richard, age 74, passed away peacefully at home in Sarnia, Ontario on June 16, 2025.
Basil is survived by his loving wife, Linda Francis Richard (Pretty), and predeceased by 1st wife Shirley Richard (1997). Children: Christopher Richard and Yi Richard, Tania Richard, Amy Jo Grunte (Shawn) (Corunna), and Daniel Pretty (Calgary). He was a proud Papa to Myles and Maizy Grunte of Corunna. He also leaves behind his sister Ivy Irving, as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Basil dedicated much of his working life to Imperial Oil and the Union, where he held various roles including supervision and was respected for his knowledge, work ethic, and quiet strength.
A true jack of all trades, Basil found joy in woodworking, drawing, painting, writing poetry, and spending time in his shop. One of his proudest accomplishments was building a cottage alongside his immediate family including his late wife Shirley Richard, his best friend, Neil McRae, and Neil’s family. The cottage was a labor of love that became a cherished family retreat.
Known as a strong, silent type, Basil valued independence and was often described as a lone wolf—most at peace working with his hands, solving problems, and creating. His life was a testament to resilience. Despite facing many health challenges, including the loss of a leg, he persevered—doing with one leg what most men wouldn’t attempt with two.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date to honour Basil’s memory.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and forever remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering determination, and the legacy he built with both heart and hands.
Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
