Surrounded by loving family, on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Bluewater Health, Erich Schechinger passed away at the age of 88.
Erich was born into a German family, in Leonów, Poland. One of 10 children, his young years were spent in Leipzig, then East Germany and he made his way to West Germany in 1952. Erich became a Welder Pipefitter and worked construction throughout Europe and Africa, when he decided that life would be better for him and his family in Canada. He immigrated to Canada in 1968, and was directed to go to Sarnia, where there would be plenty of work for his Welding expertise in the Refinery and Chemical Industry. He learned English, found work and established a home in Sarnia and his family joined him in 1969. Father to Heike (Greg) Houghton, Rainer Schechinger, Birgit (Owen) Quinn, Ralf Schechinger (Connie Ferrera), and Kerstin (James) Taylor. Grandfather to Jessica (Jeff) Williams, Toni (Justin) Kettle, Amanda Quinn (Luke Joosten), Rylie Mallette (Cole Healy), Tatum Taylor, Mitchel Schechinger, and Sofia Schechinger. Great grandfather to Mika, Ariel, Cara, Zoey, and Cayden.
Erich was a proud member of the UA Local 663 from May 1975. He retired in June 1996 and enjoyed life in Sarnia Area as retiree for 28 years. Fishing, hunting and walks along the river were some of his favorite things to do.
Cremation has taken place. Private celebration of life will take place. The family wishes to thank the Bluewater Health team for the outstanding care for Erich.
