Joe‑Ann Edna Whitfield (née Russell) passed away peacefully with family on February 6, 2026 in Sarnia, Ontario, at the age of 90. Born in Sarnia on November 13, 1935, Joe‑Ann filled every one of those years with boundless kindness, and unmistakable sparkle.
Joe‑Ann was the loving mother of Tod Whitfield (Judy) and Terri Freedman (Richard). She was the proud grandmother of Beth Whitfield, Jody Whitfield McKay (Matt; their son Killian), Rachel English (Levi; their children Matilda, Edward, and Ernest), and David Freedman (Sydney). Her family will forever carry her spirit, often noting that “there’s a little bit of Joe‑Ann in that one” when choosing a boisterous outfit, or stylish but impractical sandal.
Joe‑Ann built a life rich with companionship and friendship. She had an extraordinary gift for seeing the good in everyone and could strike up a conversation – and a genuine connection – with any stranger. She could make a friend anywhere. Her wide circle of friends who adored her and who she adored, was a testament to her warmth.
A lover of animals, she shared her life with many cats over the years, each one a cherished companion. Her cat Goldie was by her side at Pinewood Estates, where she spent two decades of her life. This past year, she moved to Rosewood Manor, bringing her charm and humour with her.
Joe‑Ann was funny, unpredictable, and unapologetically herself. Her sparkle lives on in every story her family tells and in every joyful moment they share. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by family, friends, and all who were lucky enough to have known her. Rest in peace, Gigi.
