Blackjack is one of the most popular card games currently being played at online and land-based casinos. Chances are that, if you are a new fan, you are probably going to come across blackjack before any other table game. That is why, it is important to understand the terms and see for yourself that online casinos can be just as fun as their land-based counterparts. So, in this article, we thought we would go over some of the most important blackjack terms that every beginner and experienced player should be aware of.
Eighty-Six’d
Those who are new to the game might have heard the phrase “getting eighty-six’d.” Often, in written form, the phrase can simply appear as 86’d, as well. But, what does it mean? Well, it simply refers to a person getting removed from the game, and the casino, specifically for being suspected of “advantage play.” In other words, it is a player getting suspended for counting cards.
Bust
Busting, or sometimes called “getting busted.” Is a simple phrase, and one you don’t want applied to you. When playing online blackjack, the goal is to reach 21, or as close as possible. However, exceeding a total score of 21 means that you’ve lost the game. When a player loses a game in this manner, others might call that a bust. In order to avoid a bust, players often incorporate a basic blackjack strategy. Of course, as any gambling system, the strategy is not 100% effective.
Basic Strategy
We brought up the basic strategy in the previous section, but what exactly does it mean? The basic blackjack system is a sequence of actions that will allow players to maximize the odds in their favor. It relies on studying the game, as well as the opponent’s hand in order to make the best possible decision moving forward. Any professional blackjack player has mastered this strategy long ago.
Basic Terms
The basic terms of blackjack include exactly what you’d expect; hit, hold, double down, fold. When a player asks for a hit, they are saying they want another card dealt to them. Hold means to abstain from getting another card. Doubling down means doubling your wager, drawing another card, and playing with what you have. Fold is the most obvious of the four, and it means to surrender on the hand, and either walk away or wait for the next one.
Soft and Hard
A soft and hard hands are terms that any blackjack player has almost certainly heard. Some may even be able to grasp what they mean from context alone. But, it isn’t as easy as you’d imagine. A soft hand is one that holds an ace. However, the ace is valued at 11, rather than 1. In a hard hand, the opposite is true. The ace’s value comes to 1, as opposed to 11 like in the soft hand. Some might argue that one is better than the other. But, the truth is, there are pros and cons to getting either a soft or a hard hand.
