Ontario opened its digital doors to online casino play in 2022, and initial revenue figures have been impressive. It’s clear that residents are switching on to the concept, and there is a growing list of operators to choose from. Each of those platforms builds interest by offering casino bonuses and a selection of games, and the results have been positive. The uptake is such that many industry experts feel that Sarnia could become a hub for bricks and mortar casinos moving forward.
The basic elements are here, but can Sarnia take that interest forward and become the go-to place for casino developers in Ontario?
Online Interest
All across Ontario, revenue figures have been strong since online gambling was legalized in 2022. By the end of the first quarter of 2025, the sector had reached CA$3.2 billion in gross income, and the figures revealed an increase in revenue of 32% year on year.
Those are impressive numbers, but the online sector is still new. At some point in the future, the statistics will likely level out, but they still prove there is a general interest in casino play across Ontario and within its major cities.
Existing Player
Sarnia already has a physical casino within the city limits. In January 2020, a gaming hall was set up at the Hiawatha Horse Park, featuring 150 slots and a series of card and table games. Five years on from its inception, the beginning of 2025 saw the city receive a windfall from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.
The OLG paid over $91,000 into city coffers in return for Sarnia hosting the facility. It’s a welcome boost, while the existing casino also helps the economy by providing jobs around the region.
The current establishment at Hiawatha Horse Park has been a success, but it is relatively small by modern casino standards. There is scope for larger buildings in Sarnia, and the feeling is that they would be well received.
A New Arrival
In June 2024, two floating casinos docked at Sarnia Harbour. One of the vessels, the Majestic Star II, was previously owned by one of Donald Trump’s companies, and its former name was the Trump Princess.
The boats arrived from Wisconsin, and while they intended to stay in Sarnia for several months, there was no initial intention for them to be used for commercial purposes. Their arrival, however, continued to spark debate over whether Sarnia could host more casinos, land or water based, in the future.
Sarnia’s Attractions
For any area to attract casino tourism, it should offer other attractions. In Sarnia’s case, the city already has a reputation for being a cultural hub within Ontario. There are plenty of museums and art galleries to visit, while visitors can see a concert or take in a theatre show.
A cultural center offers an ideal home for casino tourism. Within the demographics is a high proportion of high net worth individuals, who tend to enjoy slots, roulette, blackjack, and other classic games.
There is existing interest, a successful casino, and the infrastructure needed for Sarnia to enjoy a casino boom. It’s now over to the city to take advantage.
