Sarnia Rapids swimmers Aili Girardi and Colton Houck reach provincial top ten

Two local athletes from the Sarnia Rapids Swim Club secured multiple top-ten finishes and personal bests while competing against over 1,700 of Ontario’s best swimmers at the provincial championships in Toronto.

Two young athletes from the Sarnia Rapids Swim Club recently proved they can hold their own against the best in the province. Aili Girardi and Colton Houck travelled to Toronto this past weekend to compete in the Ontario Age Group (OAG) Championships.

The high-stakes provincial meet featured more than 1,700 swimmers from across Ontario. Despite the massive field of competitors, both Sarnia athletes delivered standout performances. Each swimmer recorded multiple personal best times and placed in the top 20 for every event they entered.

Aili Girardi focused her efforts on the backstroke, qualifying for three separate distances. Her highlight of the weekend came in the 100m backstroke, where she touched the wall in 1:08.0 to claim 8th place in the province. She also secured a personal best in the 50m backstroke with a time of 32.27, finishing 15th, and took 18th place in the 200m backstroke.

Colton Houck took on a demanding schedule of six events and managed to clock personal bests in nearly every race. His highest rankings came in the sprint distances, placing 5th in the 100m freestyle and 6th in the 50m freestyle. He also broke into the top ten in the 50m breaststroke with a 7th-place finish.

The weekend capped off a successful showing for the local club on the provincial stage. Both Girardi and Houck represented the Sarnia-Lambton community with pride, demonstrating the results of their dedicated training at home.
