A number of local charities, community programs and youth sports organizations received a boost this week when the Sting Assists Community Fund handed out more than $265,000 in grants and gifts.
The program is a not-for-profit, run by a group of volunteers, who raise money through selling 50/50 and jersey sales at Sting games. Money raised goes to support local youth sports, scholarships, charities and community ticket initiatives.
The 2022-2023 season marked a record-setting year for both the 50/50 and jersey sales, the group noted, adding that organizations were invited to apply through a grant process for a share of $265,500.
Cheques were handed out to the following community organizations:
Lambton Jr. Sting AAA; Sarnia Minor Hockey; Sarnia Jr. Lady Sting; Brigade Baseball Junior Teams; East Lambton Minor Hockey; St. Clair Child & Youth; BGC Sarnia [Boys & Girls Club]; St. Vincent De Paul Society; Literacy Lambton; The Inn of the Good Shepherd; Lambton Shores Minor Hockey; North Lambton Secondary School Wrestling; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton; Sarnia Minor Athletic Association; Mooretown Minor Hockey; Sarnia Ice Hawks Sledge Hockey; Noelle’s Gift; Special Olympics Sarnia; Mooretown Lady Flags; London Road Public School playground; Pathways Health Centre for Children; Point Edward Minor Athletic Association; Sarnia Minor Lacrosse; Petrolia Minor Hockey; Sarnia-Lambton Rebound.
Gift recipients included food banks in Petrolia, Oil Springs, Watford, Alvinston, Forest and the Salvation Army.
