Lambton Wildlife Inc. is inviting Sarnia families to step into the role of citizen scientists for the upcoming Children’s Christmas Bird Count. The event takes place Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, starting at the Canatara Park Animal Farm parking lot.

The program is designed for children ages 6 to 12 and introduces them to the basics of ornithology. Participants will learn to identify local species and observe winter behaviours while collecting real-time data on bird populations within the city's largest urban park.

This initiative is part of a century-old tradition of winter bird censuses. The information gathered by these young residents helps researchers understand how bird populations are shifting across Southern Ontario due to environmental changes.

Anne Goulden of Lambton Wildlife Inc. says engaging youth in citizen science is vital for the future of conservation. She notes that the event allows children to move beyond passive observation and become active participants in nature.

"By learning to identify species and understand their habitats, they develop the skills necessary to become the next generation of environmental stewards," Goulden said.

Experienced local educators will be on hand to teach children how to use binoculars and identify field marks on common local birds. Expected sightings include Blue Jays, Northern Cardinals, and Black-capped Chickadees.

The event is free to attend, though registration is required as space is limited. Participants are reminded to dress warmly for a full morning of outdoor activity. Binoculars, snacks, and nature-themed items will be provided to the children.

Lambton Wildlife Inc. is a volunteer-driven non-profit focused on protecting habitat in Lambton County. By hosting events in urban spaces like Canatara Park, the group highlights that local ecosystems are essential for the well-being of the entire community.

Parents interested in registering their children can contact the event coordinator via Lambton Wildlife Inc. at [email protected].
