Peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Bluewater Health, Leonard “Leon” Victor Abts passed away at the age of 91. Reunited at last with his beloved wife of 63 years, Maria (2020), Leon leaves behind a legacy of devotion, strength, and deep family love. Leon was the cherished father of Marianne Service (Egbert), Martine Wedemire (Kenneth), and Wendy Rivet (Jacques). He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Rohan Service (Tricia), Tyrone Service (Cassandra), Quado Service (Dorothea), Trevor Service (Maham), Sean Wedemire, and Julian Service (Monika). He was a proud and treasured great-grandfather to David and Gabriella, Talia, Alena and Elise, and Dalya and Zariya. Leon is survived by his sisters Raymonda (Staf), Bernadette (William), and Maria (Guido). He is predeceased by siblings Josephina (Francois), Francois (Alexandrina), Louis (Bertha), Victorina (Marcel), Ludovica (Kamiel), Josee (Emiel), Jean (Maria), and Eddy (Rosette). He will also be fondly remembered by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family in both Canada and Belgium. Born in Terhagen, Belgium, Leon began working at a young age to help support his family. His passions included soccer, fishing, pigeon racing, and watching tennis. He cherished time spent with his fishing buddies, Brian and the late Victor. Leon met the love of his life, Maria, and they married in 1957 before welcoming their three daughters. Together, they embarked on the adventure of immigrating to Canada to build a new life. Leon worked most of his career as an expert welder, generously sharing his knowledge and mentoring many along the way. Leon and Maria loved to travel, especially to Hawaii and Panama City Beach, where they spent countless evenings dancing the night away at Chubby’s. His heart was forever changed when he lost Maria to cancer, yet he carried on with the steadfast support of family, friends, and especially Helena. Their evenings together watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy brought comfort and joy to his life. Leon’s life was defined by dedication, resilience, and an unwavering love for those around him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Home – London Line Chapel, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., with family and friends being received from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Followed by a gathering of family and friends at the Family Centre.
