The Bluewater Anglers are inviting local fishers to cast a line in this weekend’s Walleye Derby, taking place from Friday, July 25 at 6:00 PM to Saturday, July 26 at 2:30 PM. The event is open to all anglers with a valid fishing license and a $10 entry ticket, which must be purchased at The Outdoorsman by 4:30 PM on Friday.
The derby is open to both boat and shore fishing, with participants competing to weigh in their largest single walleye. Weigh-ins will be held Saturday at the Bluewater Anglers Hatchery between 2:00 and 2:30 PM. Only one fish per person may be submitted.
Prizes will be awarded to the top ten heaviest walleyes, with first place taking home $500, thanks to a donation from the Village of Point Edward. Additional cash prizes range from $250 to $25, and there’s a bonus $100 prize for the biggest fish entered by a Bluewater Anglers member. Draw prizes will also be handed out to entrants present at the weigh-in.
The derby supports the club’s year-round hatchery and education programs. Run entirely by volunteers, the Bluewater Anglers have operated a successful fish hatchery in Point Edward since 1985, releasing 150,000 Chinook Salmon and 50,000 Rainbow Trout annually into Lake Huron and the St. Clair River.
Beyond stocking local waters, the club offers hatchery tours, kids fishing days, and their popular spring Salmon Derby, which draws thousands of anglers from both Canada and the United States.
The Bluewater Anglers club currently has around 300 members and is entirely volunteer-run. All proceeds from the Walleye Derby will go toward continuing its conservation and community outreach work.
