A freezing rain advisory from the Weather Network has forced organizers of the local light displays to reschedule the annual Crane Day. Originally set for Tuesday, the event where heavy displays are lifted for storage will now take place this Friday, January 9, at 9 a.m.

The event relies on a partnership with Sterling Crane to handle the heavy lifting of the large community displays. Organizers are looking for 20 strong volunteers to assist on Friday morning. These volunteers will help guide the displays safely while the crane operators move the structures into place for transport.

The following day, Saturday, January 10, marks the Community Tear Down Day starting at 9 a.m. Organizers are calling for a large group of volunteers to help dismantle the remaining displays and load them onto trucks. The equipment will be transported back to storage facilities at Sandrin Services.

Local support will be provided throughout both days to keep volunteers fueled. Sarnia Blessing will be on-site to provide refreshments on Friday and hot drinks and food on Saturday for those staying into the afternoon. Residents with trucks or trailers 14 feet or longer are specifically asked to assist with the transport.

High school students in Sarnia-Lambton are encouraged to participate to earn their required community involvement hours. All youth volunteers must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are asked to gather at the display site to help wrap up the season for this community-rooted event.
