Police headquarters positions deserve scrutiny
Letter writer Mark Merchant questions candidates’ changing positions on a proposed police headquarters and calls attention to their previous support for the project.

I wish to commend Randy Evans & the six-person taxpayers’ group for their effort in publishing the results of the candidate’s response to a new police station proposal.
They are absolutely correct in stating the cost would exceed $91M, in fact the last number published was $200M and supposedly excluded “soft costs”.
It is interesting to note that Chrissy McRoberts, Paul Wiersma, and Anne Marie Gillis who were executives on the SPS Board aggressively pushing for the new police station have conveniently back-tracked and supposedly no longer support the project.
McRoberts & Gillis as council members voted several times in support of a new police headquarters along with Adam Kilner, George Vandenberg, and Brian White. However, Kilner and White abstained from comment and Vandenberg was a maybe thereby each retaining some credibility.
McRoberts, Gillis and Wiersma would have you believe they had an epiphany over the last 9 months, which is why they swapped horses.
