The City of Sarnia has launched a master plan process for Sarnia’s largest and most well-known parks.
“Canatara [Park] is the centrepiece of our parks system and is valued by many of our residents,” said Krissy Glavin, the city’s parks and recreation manager. “Looking to the future we want to ensure it continues to serve their needs, be it for passive recreation, access to natural heritage, or taking in events.”
City staff are looking to the public and stakeholders for input as they develop a vision to guide future investments into the popular north-end park, according to a news release.
“The master plan will seek to guide future investments during Council’s budget process, aiming to balance diverse user needs and requirements to upgrade the park’s infrastructure.”
Originally established in the 1930s and located on the shore of Lake Huron in the north end of the City, the 174-acre park is the largest, and one of the most well known, in Sarnia.
It is the home to long-running events such as Canada Day celebrations and Christmas on the Farm alongside numerous amenities including the Children’s Animal Farm and Canatara Park Beach, one of only 27 beaches in Canada to have earned official Blue Flag status.
The development of the plan will include several touchpoints for public engagement, beginning with the opportunity for one-on-one conversations with the project team on April 3, 2024.
