City invites public to UNDRIP community conversation at Lambton College

Community members are invited to take part in a public event later this month focused on implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in Sarnia.

The City’s UNDRIP Working Group is hosting a Community Conversation: Implementing UNDRIP in the City of Sarnia on Wednesday, May 29, at Lambton College’s Event Centre. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include presentations, small group discussions, and opportunities for participants to share ideas and provide feedback.

The event is part of the Working Group’s efforts to guide the development of a local UNDRIP Implementation Plan through public engagement and dialogue.

“An important part of the UNDRIP Working Group’s mandate is to guide the City in the development of the City of Sarnia's United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Implementation Plan through community engagement and active listening,” said Working Group Chair Brad Brownlee. “The Community Conversation is designed to bring together a broad range of community voices in order to provide the Working Group with the guidance needed to craft a meaningful, action driven strategy.”

The agenda will include an overview of UNDRIP, background on the Working Group itself, and information about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Organizers say the event is designed to support education, awareness, and relationship-building between the City and Indigenous communities, with a focus on communication and collaboration.

Local leaders from Sarnia and area First Nations have been invited, and registration is now open to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis.
