Political leaders in Sarnia are calling on Ontario to take action following two serious transport truck accidents on Highway 402 in less than a week.
Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley and Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey each wrote the Transportation Minister last week to ask for a highway safety review near the Christina Street interchange.
Three transport-trailers crashed just east of there on July 19, resulting in the death of a U.S. driver.
Five days later, another three rigs collided in a chain reaction close to the first crash. A Quebec man has been charged with careless driving.
“The Blue Water Bridges are the only bridges that can take hazardous goods in and out of the United States,” Bradley noted in a letter to Minister Steven Del Duca.
Bailey invited the minister to a meeting of local stakeholders to discuss highway speed, design and signage.
“Are you satisfied that the appropriate measures have been taken to prevent accidents along this stretch of Highway 402?” he asked him.
