The 102 Sarnia First Hussars Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps held its 122nd Annual Ceremonial Review on Saturday, June 14, at the Sarnia Armouries, closing out the 2024–2025 training year with formal reviews and award presentations.
Family members, community representatives, and local officials were in attendance to observe the parade, which recognized cadets for their participation and performance throughout the year. Reviewing officer Superintendent Deb Lucas of the Sarnia Jail was joined by, First Hussars Major Wayne Finkle, Army Cadet League (Ontario) Director Paul Preikschas, and Corps Commanding Officer Lieutenant(Navy) Jeff Brewer.
Cadet Master Warrant Officer Maddisyn Smith who served as the Corps’ Regimental Sergeant Major, was among those recognized with multiple honours, including the Lord Strathcona Medal, the Most Valuable Cadet Award, and the award for Most Outstanding Cadet.
“There were many weeks of practice leading up to this event, and the cadets’ dedication and preparation was the key to our success,” said Smith.
Trooper Tyson Thomson, this year’s Top Recruit, said he joined cadets “because I thought it would be fun,” and hopes to continue advancing in the program.
Twenty-six cadets participated in this year’s review. Awards presented included:

John O’Neill Memorial Trophy – MCpl Myles Hobbs
Perfect Attendance – MWO Devante Deen, WO Hayden Blair, MWO Maddisyn Smith, Cpl Kaleb Johnson, Cpl Mallory McCoy-McManus, Trooper Deklyn Falls, Trooper Layland Leach
Top Marksman – Trooper Owen Tersteege
Top Biathlete – Master Warrant Officer Devante Deen
Support Committee Award – Cpl Mallory McCoy-McManus
Most Valuable Cadet – MWO Maddisyn Smith
Most Outstanding Cadet – MWO Maddisyn Smith
Legion Medal of Excellence – MWO Devante Deen
Lord Strathcona Medal – MWO Maddisyn Smith
Guests included representatives from Lambton College, the Sarnia Legion, Moose Lodge, Point Edward Ex-Servicemen’s Club, and City Councillor George Vandenburg attending on behalf of the mayor.
The Corps meets weekly from September to June. An open house is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sarnia Armouries.
