The City of Sarnia recently received a payment of $79,270 from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) for hosting Gateway Casinos Sarnia. This installment covers the third quarter of the fiscal year, spanning October 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025.
Since the local gaming site opened its doors in May 1999, the city has received a cumulative total of $28,334,229. For the current fiscal year alone, Sarnia's share of gaming revenue stands at $278,473.
These payments are determined by a standard formula outlined in the Municipality Contribution Agreement. The scale is based on graduated gaming revenue generated specifically at the Sarnia site.
Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey noted that these funds serve as a consistent source of revenue for the city. He stated the money helps deliver local services and supports the quality of life for residents.
While the OLG frames these payments as a reinvestment in the province, this revenue is part of a broader system of municipal funding that relies on gaming proceeds. The OLG reports that 100 per cent of its profits are directed back into provincial communities.
Over the last nine years, private sector service providers have invested $2.9 billion in capital projects across Ontario. This includes the development of new casinos and the expansion of existing gaming floors and amenities.
