It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard “Dicky” Lockett, age 77, a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend.
Dicky often joked that he would never make it to see another year, yet somehow managed to defy the odds at every turn.
He kept his bedside table well stocked with his “stash,” which the grandkids, nieces, and nephews knew they could raid without their parents’ permission at any time. He had the biggest heart, and his family learned exactly how to take advantage of it at precisely the right time – a skill that took many years of refining and was quickly passed down to the next generation! From getting him to open his billfold after just the right number of Labatt Blues (or Bud Lights in the later years), to finding hidden money in books, generously stuffing the Christmas stockings, handing out giant handfuls of Halloween candy to the neighbourhood kids, or selling the brand-new couch out of the living room to a young kid heading off to college who came to the family garage sale and “needed it more than us.” He could be a stubborn man, but generosity was never something that Dicky lacked.
Dicky loved his days on the golf course, travelling, winters in Florida, a good home-cooked meal and baked goods, and, of course, coming home to Marianne. But he loved nothing more than sitting around the picnic table or campfire with those he loved most, with a beer or whiskey in hand, candles lit, and classic country tunes playing. He was never afraid to tell you to get out of his house (often to the tune of Mickey Mouse), or threaten to call you a cab the moment dinner was done so that he could go to bed. Most of the time, nobody listened anyway. His teasing, stories, songs, and unmistakable sense of humour were all part of what made Dicky, Dicky.
Dicky was a proud electrician and a longtime member of IBEW Local 530. He was part of the first year of the electrical program offered at Fanshawe College and began his apprenticeship on July 10, 1969, beginning a career he would take great pride in for decades. Nothing made him prouder than seeing his son and grandson follow in his footsteps and begin careers in the trade.
He was surrounded by loved ones in his final moments, just as he had spent so much of his life surrounded by the people who mattered most to him.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 39 years, Marianne, his beloved dog Spunky, his children, grandchildren, sisters, sister-in-law, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family, and many dear friends.
Dicky was one of a kind. He was loved, and he will be missed more than he probably ever would have believed.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dicky’s life will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026 from1:00 – 4:00 pm at Greystone Golf Course, 2218 Confederation Street, Sarnia, Ontario N7T 7H3, where we’ll gather to share stories and raise a glass together. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements have been made.
