Went home to her Lord peacefully, on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Lydia passed away at Sumac Lodge at the age of 81.
Lydia was the beloved wife of the late Harm Niemeyer and loving mother of Fred (Michelle) Niemeyer, Harold (Patricia) Niemeyer, Marleen (Jeff) VandenBrink and Mark (Bindya) Niemeyer. Lydia adored her grandchildren Kristin, Nicole, Nathan (Cora), Austin (Victoria), Angelena (Michael) and Lindsay (Adam) and great grandchildren Jackson, Ella and Hailey. Dear sister of Eddy. Predeceased by her parents Geert and Aaltje Steen and 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
Lydia was born in Hengelo, Overijssel the Netherlands. Lydia immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands with her husband and children in 1974 and although Holland was always in her heart, Canada was home and she would not miss cheering for Canada in the Olympics or proudly cheering on her Toronto Blue Jays.
Lydia loved family most and enjoyed Sunday family gatherings where she made sure we always had our fill of Dutch meals and treats. She also loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening in her yard. Lydia worked for many years at Vison Nursing Home as was a beloved member of Living Hope CRC.
Friends and family will be received at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Monday, February 23rd from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday, February 24th at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church, 1281 Exmouth St., Sarnia at 10:00 a.m., with the funeral to immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery immediately following the service with a light luncheon to follow.
