It is with broken hearts that the family of Charlie Smith announce his passing at home surrounded by loved ones, on Tuesday, December 30, 2025; he was 84 years old. Beloved husband of 63 years to Bonnie. Loving father of Jerry Smith, Lori McAuley (Dean), Nathan Smith (Jacqueline). Cherished grandfather of Taylor Smith (Elizabeth), Melissa Edgar (Mike), Jayson McAuley (Olivia), and Charlie Smith (Niamh). Treasured great-grandfather of Emily, Bronwen, John, Brielle, Wyatt, Scarlett and Thomas. Dear brother of Ann Archibald (Bill), Bill Smith (Bev), Don Smith (Norma).
Predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Velma Smith, and by his siblings Bill Smith and Don Smith.
Charlie began his career working for the Department of Highways right out of high school as a surveyor. He enjoyed the challenge that construction provided and was fortunate throughout his career to work with some fantastic local companies and subcontractors. He eventually worked into the role of project estimator.
Charlie was an avid sports fan. He participated in League-bowling in the 70’s and became a huge motorsports fan. Between old-school Nascar and his yearly trip with ‘the guys’ to the Indianapolis 500, he attended over 30 races in person and hundreds of Sunday afternoon must-see broadcasts. Hockey Night in Canada and Sarnia Sting also kept him watching.
He enjoyed a simple life which included travel with his family, and weekly coffee with some long-time friends.
Charlie was a strong and steady provider for his family, extending his support to continuing education funds for each of his grandkids whom he loved very much.
He was so proud and took so much joy from each of his grandkids, whether he was cheering for them on the sidelines or celebrating their latest report card, they always felt special to grandpa. He will be deeply missed by all, most especially his loving wife Bonnie.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Thursday, January 8, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. with family and friends being received at 1:00 p.m. A burial of ashes will be held at Sutherland Cemetery in the spring.
