It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the peaceful passing of Pietro Sottosanti, age 84, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Bluewater Health, surrounded by his loving family. Pietro was the beloved husband of Rosa Sottosanti. He leaves behind his cherished children, Giovanni “John” (Pam) Sottosanti, Angela Parsons, Rosemary DeHoog, and Maria Grazia. He was the proud grandfather of Julia (Tom), Ella, Benjamin Peter, Matthew, Hannah, Jenna, and Ethan. He will also be fondly remembered by his loyal 'granddog', Charley. Pietro was a loving brother to Giuseppina (Gennaro) Cacace, Maria (Antonio) Arabia, Giuseppe (Rosetta) Sottosanti, Salvatore (Rose) Sottosanti, Antonino Sottosanti, Vincenzo Sottosanti, and Calogero (Cindy) Sottosanti. He will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Pietro was predeceased by his parents, Giovanni and Arcangela Sottosanti, as well as his siblings Antonina Elmo, Rosa Sottosanti, Sebastiana Liuzzi, and Rosalia Sottosanti. He was also predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Salvatore Liuzzi and Giuseppe Elmo. In 1968, Pietro and Rosa made the courageous decision to emigrate to Canada from Sicily, seeking a better life in Canada. Upon arriving here and realizing the better life, he helped many members of his family, as well as friends, to immigrate, fostering a close-knit Sicilian community in Sarnia. Pietro always maintained a strong connection to his heritage and traditions. A hardworking and dedicated man, Pietro took great pride in his work with the Laborers' Union. Outside of work, he found joy in tending to his garden, where he often exchanged homegrown vegetables and plants with friends and neighbours. He was also known for his exceptional winemaking skills, proudly proclaiming that his all-natural wine was far superior to any store-bought variety. In his leisure time, Pietro and Rosa enjoyed watching their favorite programs on Telelatino and RAI, as well as following his beloved sports teams, Inter Milan and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Above all, Pietro cherished his family. The family home was a gathering place for Sunday dinners and special occasions, where Pietro’s greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. Pietro will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Family and friends are invited to visit at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1465 Lecaron Ave., on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., followed by entombment at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bluewater Health-Palliative Care or The Heart and Stroke Foundation (cheques only, please).
