It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Leonie Collette Thompson (Middelton). Leonie was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many. Peacefully surrounded by her loving family, Leonie passed away at the age of 91 on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at Bluewater Health in Sarnia.
Leonie lived a very full and eventful life. She was born March 13, 1933, in Rangoon, Burma, now known as Yangon, Myanmar, a beautiful country that unfortunately has and is still facing its hardships with obtaining democracy. At age 52, she immigrated to Canada in November 1985 to live more peacefully. She absolutely loved to sing and dance. She made many of her lifelong friends through these pastimes, including dancing the night away at the singles’ dances that she fondly attended in Sarnia and singing with her choir group at nursing homes in the community. She was well liked and respected in her church community at Trinity Anglican Church and the former St. James the Apostle Anglican Church. In addition to these pastimes, Leonie was an avid fan of watching Jeopardy and tennis. She almost never missed a match in both types of games. She also enjoyed reading often and writing poetry, so much so that she recently published a small book of her written works, titled A Sentimental Journey.
Leonie was a devoted mother and is survived by her 10 children, Janis Myint Swe (James), Charles Thompson, Trevor Thompson (Sue), Bradley Thompson, Raylene White, Lloyd Thompson, Belinda Vargas (Edward), Melanie Thompson (Cho), Bevis Thompson (Mar) and Michelle Thompson (Kevin). She was predeceased by her husband, John Joseph Thompson, who passed in 1992.
Leonie was the darling eldest sister in her immediate family. She is survived by her sisters Glennis Enselmoz, Yolanda Tite and Maureen Ross, and was predeceased by her brothers Carl, Ratford and Bevin Middleton.
She is dearly missed by her 12 grandchildren, Joycelyn, Jonathan, Jackie, Tyler, Crystal, Edwina, Brandon, Mabel, Johnny, Brenda, Sandra and Christopher, and her 5 great grandchildren, Nicolas, Mya, Jasmine, Xavier and Adam.
A warm and sincere thanks to Dr. MacSweeney and the devoted staff in Palliative Care at Bluewater Health. Thank you for your kindness, care and compassion.
